On Thursday, T.S. Sivagnanam was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. The ceremony was held in a courtroom of the Calcutta High Court, where Governor Dr. CV Anand Bose administered the oath to the new Chief Justice.
The event was attended by various dignitaries, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Leader of Opposition Shubhendu Adhikari, Chandrima Bhattacharya, Firhad Hakim, Malay Ghatak, Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee, and members of the High Court Bar Association.
However, the swearing-in ceremony was not without controversy, as there were political protests among the leaders in attendance.
Mayor Firhad Hakim had occupied the seat reserved for the Leader of the Opposition, and Shubhendu Adhikari was seen engaged in his mobile phone for some time. After a brief conversation between Hakim and Adhikari, Hakim moved to the seat on the left side of the same row.
Despite the tension, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee congratulated the new Chief Justice after the swearing-in ceremony. She went to him and wished him well, and the event concluded peacefully. The new Chief Justice, T.S. Sivagnanam, had previously served as the Acting Chief Justice after the retirement of Prakash Srivastava.
